Sadly, most of that is because Stackpole refused to finish the series and the publishers had a ghost writer do it but due to contract stuff his name was on the cover. Stackpole was a one book, one story kind of guy and never should have tried his hands at series. It never worked out well for him or the readers.

Ah, the challenges.
Some of the best series are really just one big story that is way too long for one book. I’m looking at you, Tolkien.
