Apparently I Hate Me

Ever since I’ve gone Dotcom back in January, I’ve had a strange issue where I will spontaneously unfollow myself. I follow myself to make sure my posts make it into the WP Reader and to make sure I’m seeing the same things that everyone else is seeing. It just makes sense to mingle with the masses and to try to see things from their perspective after all.

WP’s “Help” aka “Happiness Engineers” (gag me) helpfully suggested that maybe I’ve accidentally clicked on something in the reader to unfollow myself. I didn’t naysay that because I never payed attention to that. But today it happened again, while I was away from the computer and it was impossible for me to have clicked anything. I’ve just sent them an email and we’ll see what they have to say this time.

I’m just wondering if any of you have experienced something like this? Or am I truly unique and having issues that nobody else has ever had before? I am not a big fan of being unique this way :-/

    1. Yeah, this is the type of thing I’d expect from a self-hosted site, NOT wordpress.com itself. It’s not happened to anyone else I follow either, as I’ve been keeping a VERY close eye on that.

      Just can’t win them all I guess…

      1. Straight out of 1984, that term. I at first thought you‘re being sarcastic, then I realized it‘s for real … geez.

Oddly enough, while I do follow myself, too, and my blog is self-hosted, this has *not* happened to me yet. So, apparently a WP.com issue, as some of the others have suggested?

    1. That is what really concerns me, what if WP screws up and has someone unfollow me who actually wants to keep following me? I have close to 400 followers and there is no way I can keep track of those kinds of numbers.

Thankfully, those I follow is a manageable number. But it is concerning.

      Are you hosted through wordpress.com?

      1. Yes I am. It doesn’t happen very often, but eventually I notice I haven’t had posts from someone popping up in the reader, so I go looking for them and re-press the follow button if I’ve ‘unfollowed’ them.

  1. Oh gosh, I experience the at least three or four times a year. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who follows myself. 😂 I’ve asked them repeatedly why posts sometimes don’t go into the reader, and they can never give me a straight answer. 😂

    1. Well shoot. I was kind of hoping it was just me, but it would seem to be a dotcom problem then. You’re hosted by wordpress.com, right?

I have to say, their expertise in answering issues like this is only matched by their expertise in creating a wonderful new editor that everyone loves and adores 😉

      1. Nope, it’s me too. I’ve had to contact them a handful of times. When it doesn’t show up in the reader, I usually have to copy the post, delete the old, and repost the new.

I pay a lot for my blog. It’s close to $100 a year due to space, and I still have problems with it. It seems to be better than what it used to, sometimes followers will tell me what that a post isn’t in their reader. I hate to complain about it, but it’s just annoying.

          1. I try to stay positive and realize that there isn’t a single social media platform that’s perfect, but it is so annoying for me because when you pay money for a service it should be user friendly, and it shouldn’t have so many glitches. I know some people have free accounts here. Goodreads has tons of problems, but it’s free, so there’s a difference.

I almost wonder if the glitches are why so many people have left WP. Since I’ve come back I can’t believe how many are gone. I chalked it up to more popular platforms. 🤔

              1. I believe it. I’m used to it now, but it’s still a pain in ways. As far as photos, I’ll check into that. Someone messaged me and suggested I optimize pics because me site was loading slow. 😆 I really just want things to be simple with write-up-and-go posts. I’d rather spend my extra time reading than doing web stuff. Lol

  2. 🤔 I would expect an actual WordPress domain to be less problematic than a WordPress subdomain.

You should keep interacting with the Happiness Engineers until they provide you with a plausible answer.

    1. I know, right? Why pay money to have MORE problems?

I’m going to keep trying, but at the level I’m at (personal plan), I can only get email help. I’m blocked from using the forums because I made a huge stink about the block editor and said things they didn’t want me to. So that avenue is out. Sigh….

  3. I just saw that the WP icon changed to a diff colour, might be something to do with the update? I normally get notifications when you post, but lately WP just has a dot to say some one I asked to be notified when they post has posted. I feel there is a lit of gremlining going on at the moment… Happynes engineers my ass…😖

  4. Your evil twin is wreaking havoc in WP as he secretly unfollowed us too – and many other people everywhere… Could it be that your evil twin is actually a WP Happiness Engineer in a parallel universe? 😉

  5. I’m steadfastly refusing to pay wordpress. Their free site has kinks so I don’t like the idea of paying for kinks … kinda made this site sound like a brothel there (maybe that’s that’s why they gave themselves the ludicrous name of ‘happiness engineers’😂)

    1. I pay for the removal of ads and native sponsored posts not because I think I’m getting something “more”. So I completely get where you are coming from.
I’d be seriously tempted to go self-hosted except I’ve seen what full time that can be and I have no desire to turn my blog into a job 😀

As for paying for kinks, hahahhaa. Well, you might not be that far off the mark 😦

      1. Actually, I totally get where you’re coming from. The sponsored posts are a nightmare and ads can be very annoying.

Fortunately, wordpress don’t have them implemented on their app. so using the app to read posts on my smartphone dodges all of those. Just hope they aren’t smart enough to realise that fact.

  6. I don’t follow myself, but I do find that randomly, I sometimes don’t get shown posts by people I follow. I also find that my number of followers fluctuates spontaneously. When it drops, I’m not savvy enough to find out who unfollowed me and whether they did it on purpose, or the algorithm did it to them.

    1. I’ve heard a LOT of complaints about posts not showing up in the WP reader for no reason and that WP just kind of brushes it off.

As for other people unfollowing me, I simply let it go. They either did it on purpose, or it was a WP problem and will be back (hopefully)
