Back in January I wrote a post about how I’d gotten the Doom board game and some markers and other Tools of the Trade. This was my foray into the world of miniature painting, errr, markering? I think it is obvious that since this is my first follow up post that I am in no danger of turning into a hobby miniaturist. All pictures should be clickable for bigger pix.
Here are the 4 Space Marines facing off against a slightly obscured (unmarkered) Duke of Hell. The marines are supposed to be Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. The red was a bit darker than I expected and the “yellow” really turned more of a lime green. I suspect the tan of the mini’s themselves played a part in that.

These are the yellow and blue that I just finished yesterday. Unfortunately, my camera phone doesn’t like taking really close pictures. But you can see that I stuck with the “silver” scheme for the weapons, black for boots and hands and then one solid color for the base and body. You will never win any Aesthetic Awards using markers and I’m even worse. Just look at the feet. But all I need is a bit of color to liven up the game. No masterpieces here!

Thankfully, Mrs B’s phone has a “focus” function. You can really see here how the coverage isn’t that great. I’m sure I could go over it again with the ultra-fine marker and try to fill in the gaps, but that is not going to happen. My eyes aren’t good enough to see this unaided, so what do I care?

My next goal is to get a couple of the doom demons markered up. I will say that all the little details on these mini’s makes using markers a very sub-optimal option, IF making them look good is your goal. I think the markers would work much better on broad flat surfaces.
Considering my track record, if I can get in one more “Minis” post before New Years I’ll be doing well ๐
Phil paints scale figures and he has to use 3 x magnification to do details, also one figure takes days! I might buy him a set of markers for Christmas ๐

Hahahahaa. I doubt he would appreciate the markers ๐ ๐ ๐
Of course, it all depends on what’s important, getting the mini done, or getting it done right ๐

Great post mate. I’ll be dipping my toes into painting hopefully soon as well.

Thanks! I figured work had put the kabosh on you and the painting world. Glad to hear you’re still thinking about it.

Looks like a lot of fun to be honest. Have you tried a bit of weathering? Those figures would come up amazingly with a bit of black paint rubbed all over them and rubbed off again. Sorry if I sounded a bit excited then ๐ great work and thank you for sharing.

No worries Tales, I can tell you are an enthusiast ๐
I am not an enthusiast, hence the markers, hahahaaa.
Paint is simply not on the menu for me. Too much work for a result that I don’t actually care about. Quick and dirty is my line here.

Woah! Looks like Fraggle may have a bit of a rival with that photography! Another cage match on the schedule?

Hahahaha. Yeah, camera phone vs Real Camera.
Bring it!
Maybe my doom marines can fight against Fraggle’s Freggo. Seems like a fair matchup ๐

Now that – that, Booky – would be an interesting fight. You’re going to be a very busy, very rich man in the coming months!

But . . . is it a fun game? Or is painting the figurines the game?

No, painting the mini’s isn’t the game, although for some people it probably would be.
Once I play the tutorial I’ll do a write up but the videos on youtube make it seem like a VERY fun game, if you like that kind of thing.

Any post about game play forthcoming too?

Not soon, but hopefully before the end of the year. And even then, I make no firm promises. Me and games are simply passing acquaintances ๐

Using markers to paint figures sounds very novel to me, but also very efficient ๐ Quick and dirty, and you can already play as you can easily tell which marine is yours ๐

With drying time, it takes about 15minutes a mini, which is about all the investment I want to put into it ๐

Not bad for marker work! I’ve never tried, but I would think you get better control than with paint brush, which is a pain.

The biggest issue with the markers is getting into all the little nooks and crannies. They literally won’t fit.

Ever thought of dipping them into paint and then working with markers and whatnot for the other colours (e.g. boots in black, guns in silver, etc.)? That might easily fix those hard to reach spots hahaha
Looking forward to seeing them demons in colour now. ๐

Nope, paint is out of the question. It would solve all those issues but I can guarantee I would never use a bottle of paint.
Hopefully I’ll get some done before years end ๐
