Title: Lyon’s Pride

Series: Tower and the Hive #4

Author: Anne McCaffrey

Rating: 1 of 5 Stars

Genre: SFF

Pages: 336

Synopsis:

The war against the insects continues and the Talents continue their spread.

My Thoughts:

Due to the inclusion and normalization of homosexuality, I will not be finishing this series.

With that being said, I also think I’m done with McCaffrey. I know she won’t be writing any more, obviously, but I’m tired of finding landmines like this and having to deal with it. I’ve read what I’ve wanted to of hers and now I’m done.

Title: Damia’s Children

Series: Tower and the Hive

Author: Anne McCaffrey

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: SFF

Pages: 300

Synopsis:

Following the exploits of Damia’s Children as they come of age and deal with the Hive threat in their time.

My Thoughts:

This was more 4 short stories than 1 novel. However, that worked out ok as you only had to stay with one character so long, which is a blessing if you happen to hate a particular child.

The Hive have lost their homeworld and there is a vocal minority among humanity clamoring for “peace and understanding” even while having no clue about the viciousness of the Hive. To be honest, the child associated with this part of the story drove me up the wall and almost made me put this book down. I can’t stand when “feelings” trump sound, solid thinking.

The other three stories were quite enjoyable. One was about the eldest girl going to the Mridini homeworld to further cement the alliance between Mridini and Humanity. The next 2 were about the 2 boys going to military vessels and using their Talent. The final story dealt with another daughter who was just coming into her teen years and all that that entails.

Overall, this was a good solid story by McCaffrey. Hoping this keeps up with the next 2 books.

Oh, yeah, the cover. This cover is SO aimed at the teen girl crowd. I wouldn’t have read it based on that alone. However, based on the original cover (picture below), I would definitely be reading this. Marketing is scary!

Title: Damia

Series: The Tower and the Hive #2

Author: Anne McCaffrey

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: SFF

Pages: 391

Synopsis:

The Rowan and Jeff are pushing out babies left and right. Afra, a T4 who was in love with the Rowan, translates his feelings into protecting their children. And is the target of the 3rd child’s seduction, Damia.

Then Damia grows up and they get it on. And lots of adventures happen inbetween all that.

My Thoughts:

First, this book is as much about Afra as it is about Damia. It is simply a very long, drawn out romance with some science-fiction and action elements thrown in. Still pretty enjoyable however.

My main quibble was with the attempted seduction by Damia of Afra when she was still a teenager. One, it was silly [Oh Afra, won’t you rub suntan lotion on me? Oops, you missed a spot, right down here] and Two, it was disturbing. The sexualization of minors is not something I find acceptable or want to read about.

Overall, a good light adventure romp.

Oh, I HATE the new covers. They are definitely aimed at the teen female crowd. I’m just glad I read this back when it came out so I could read it again. With the original cover.

Title: The Rowan

Series: The Tower and the Hive #1

Author: Anne McCaffrey

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: SFF

Pages: 334

Synopsis:

Humanity has moved out into space, with help of the Talented. Those special people who have Extra Abilities, whether of the mind or body.

The most sought after, the rarest, are the Primes, Talents with multiple abilities and who can transport cargo from planet to planet, system to system.

One day, a Prime is discovered, a young child with no memories and no antecedents. She will grow up to become The Rowan, one of the Most Powerful Primes Earth has ever seen.

But what she discovers is even greater than her.

My Thoughts:

I remember reading this when it first came out. It was probably my first SFF book that was as heavy on the romance as it was on the SFF. So that was my memory, but it has been some time so I wanted to re-read this series and get my thoughts in writing.

I’d like to start out by saying that I did enjoy this book and will be continuing the series. However, this was a puff piece of girl power and the Perfect Man. Much like the Mack Bolan/Executioner series is a puff piece of Macho’ness.

It was fun seeing Rowan grow up. Meeting the heretofore new Prime and finding out about the Alien Menace. And dealing the first decisive blow. I am glad McCaffrey didn’t make her characters sit around and debate the ethics of dealing with a real menace.

A good solid dray horse of a tale, even if not a racing stallion.

It was ok but I could see that this book should have been one to wrap up the Pern series. Sadly, it is still going.

The story of Master Robinton from his being born til the events of the first Dragonrider trilogy. An extremely talented boy is ignored by his perfectionist father even while being better than him. Amazing that Robinton turned out as well as he did. A very enjoyable tale, even though McCaffrey shows her true colors in regards to her views on marriage and sexuality.

Not sure what is up with this specific edition on Goodreads. It is NOT abridged. [nor specially priced :D]
