My Thoughts:

Scot Harvath is an arrogant ass hat of a main character. So when he just stayed that way, I realized that the author, Brad Thor, is deliberately writing him that way.

Therefore, I’m done. There IS a difference between being competent and being a jerk. Also, once again, all of Harvath’s supposed former military training seems to have gone out the door. He doesn’t ACT like a highly trained former SEAL, former Secret Service agent. He is not a fun character to read about. Half the action of this thriller seems to derive from his bad decisions.

It makes me wonder about Brad Thor.

Synopsis:

Those damn Ruskies have been playing us for decades. Suddenly, Communism is about to take over and Russia is going to suitcase nuke 20 of our cities. At the same time, they have developed a super secret air defense so that no missiles can get into their airspace. ONLY Scot Harvath, hunk o’ burning love macho secret agent man, can save the United States. Nobody else.

 

My Thoughts:

This was a huge step up from the previous book, but I think that was because Harvath keeps his trap shut and just goes around shooting people and blowing things up and being all manly. This time around he’s not a completely arrogant ass hat. But don’t worry, he tries.

These books are totally unbelievable and this is coming from a guy who reads mainly science fiction and fantasy.  For example, nobody knows where the suitcase nukes are at the beginning of the book. By the end, they know where they are and they roll up the people and the nukes without one going off.

This was the kind of book, and probably will be that kind of series until I quit, that I just enjoy to pick apart and make fun of. I consider this to be the man’s version of Harlequin romances for woman. Sickening fluff with no substance that you hate even while you’re reading it and yet you keep coming back for more after an appropriate break.  I feel dirty now, like a garbage disposal.

But my goodness, the action, THE ACTION!!!!

I am not a big fan of pictures in reviews, but I feel the following is true to this series.

Title: Path of the Assassin

Synopsis:

Scot breaks up with the woman from the previous book because of Reasons.

He then gets involved with the CIA in bringing down a terrorist who is trying to start WWIII in the Middle East. But only Scot knows Reasons and everyone else is an idiot so it is up to Scot to save the world.

And he meets Woman 2.

 

My Thoughts:

Let’s start off with 2 quotes from early on in the book:

 

Religions were supposed to represent tolerance.

“To tell you the truth, Father, I don’t think God has a favorite football team, or a favorite religion”

pg 40

 

Now, what kind of idiot is Brad Thor? I couldn’t tell if he was being deliberately obtuse or just shockingly ignorant and letting his ignorance hang out there for all to see.

So that was not a good start to the book.

 

Then him breaking up with Swiss Lawyer lady because of their work situations.  Well duh! You have to make choices that put the relationship first and if you are in a work situation where you can’t do that, or choose not to do that, then it won’t last. And that idea was, surprisingly, given lip service. But then 2 weeks later he falls for President of Her Own Company Lady and NO thought is given that maybe this will follow the same path? Scot Harvath is having Emotional one night stands. The women so far might as well be emotional whores and Scot is their John. I’d toss him in jail so fast…

With all of that being said, this sunk below the 2 star mark and I was ready to just put this down. But, because it is a thriller, the action ramped up from 0-160 in the blink of an eye. Terrorist attacks, planes & hostages, gun battles from fast cars in a hurricane, speedboat chases, Special Ops attack on a terrorist camp. You name it, it probably happened.

And all that action is the only reason I continued this and am going to read the next book. For the record, that is NOT a good footing to be on.

Synopsis: Spoilers Ahoy!

The President of the United States is kidnapped and the lone surviving Secret Service Agent, Scot Harvath, must rescue him all by himself to clear his name.

Hindering investigations left and right, going with his gut and ignoring all the SEAL Team Two training he has ever received, Scot globetrots based on a chocolate bar and a wine bottle.

I kid you not.

 

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this and it was closer to a 3 1/2 than just a 3, but Scot’s lone wolf attitude just doesn’t jive with everything we’re told about him.

A SEAL wouldn’t hide evidence because he thinks he knows better. A SEAL wouldn’t randomly fire into store windows just to destroy them without knowing if there are civilians behind said windows. A SEAL wouldn’t fire a gun into a civilian crowd just to keep his enemies heads down.

While SEALS are trained to be one man killing machines, they are trained to function as part of a group. Nothing about Scot in any way said “Team”.

You get past that though and this was just a fun thriller. A ton of action, just the right amount of romance [a smidge, nothing more] and lots of room for tons of books to follow. It was a little long for the plot it was carrying, but as this was Thor’s first book, it’s not surprising. Hopefully the later books will be a bit tighter and leaner.
