My Thoughts:

Another fine collection by Watterson. I found myself laughing a lot more in this collection than in the previous one. I don’t know if that is because this was truly funnier, or if it was because more time had elapsed since my last C&H read.

I’ve got a few more collections left. Once I’m done with those, I don’t know that I’ll ever plan on re-reading these. As a teen, C&H enthralled me. As an adult, they’re amusing me. I suspect that as a mature adult, they will come across as tedious or shallow. I don’t want that and I’d rather never read them again and keep the good memories.

Finally, is that title a mouthful or what? I had to go to Wikipedia and just search out Calvin and Hobbes and then copy/paste the title or else I would have gotten it wrong.

My Thoughts:

Having read 6 years of comics [I believe each book covers a years worth of weekly strips] in just over 1/2year most of the shine has worn off. Calvin gets into trouble, Calvin annoys the babysitter, Calvin fights with Hobbes, Calvin and Hobbes have an adventure.

It Is The Same.

My Thoughts:

The 5th collection by Watterson. There aren’t even themes tying the comics together, so you can’t really “review” these books. Each strip is individual and stands on its own.

My Thoughts:

Yet another book of Calvin and Hobbes strips. These seemed to have been written in 1988, an election year, so there are some political spoofs, but nothing overt.

Other than that, since these are all pretty much one offs, you can read just about any book and fit right in. It’s rather an amazing how Watterson kept thinking of interesting things that didn’t require some long and complicated plot.

Genius.

Title: Yukon Ho!

Series: Calvin and Hobbes

Author/Artist: Bill Watterson

Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

Genre: Comics

Pages: 126

Synopsis:

The further adventures of Calvin and Hobbes. With appearances by Suzy the girl next door, Rosalyn the babysitter from hell and Calvin’s Mom and Dad.

My Thoughts:

I am still enjoying these. I did notice that there was more conflict between Hobbes and Calvin, More like brothers than best friends.

I have to admit, I don’t know how Watterson wrote strip after strip, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. It is an incredible show of stamina. I don’t know how his brain came up with all the ideas.

Other than that, since these are standalone comics, it is kind of hard to write anything about them.

Title: Something Under The Bed Is Drooling

Series: Calvin and Hobbes

Author/Artist: Bill Watterson

Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

Genre: Comics

Pages: 128

Synopsis:

The further adventures of Calvin and his best friend Hobbes. We are introduced to Rosalyn the infamous babysitter. Susy the girl next door becomes more entrenched as the love/hate interest. And life as a kid is shown in all its glory and all its horror.

My Thoughts:

What a wonderful book. This was as good as the first. Since this is a series of daily strips, there is not an overall plot. You might get several comics in a row dealing with the same story arc, but that is it.

The art is simple and yet Watterson is able to portray so many intricate feelings and situations. It seems simple but if I were to try to portray these comics with words, I am not sure I could do it. Watterson does it with almost stick characters. I used the word “genius” in my review of the first book I believe and I can only say the same again.

Title: Calvin and Hobbes

Series: Calvin and Hobbes

Author/Artist: Bill Watterson

Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

Genre: Comics

Pages: 128

Format: Digital scan

Synopsis:

We are introduced to Calvin, a 6 year old and how he captured his best friend, Hobbes, a stuffed tiger.

A weekly comic strip from the late 80’s and 90’s, Calvin and Hobbes is about youth, pure and simple.

My Thoughts:

Since I had no money when these started coming out, being but a stripling myself, I would request these for my birthday and once a year I would revel in the adventures of Calvin and his best friend, Hobbes.

Having embarked upon a reread, I found these just as delightful, just as fun and just as wonderful as I remembered. Which goes to show that Bill Watterson was not only a good comic artist, but a genius when it comes to seeing life through the eyes of a young boy.

I have to say, a mere 128 pages sure seems a lot less than it did back then though…
