Well, Lindskold finally lost me here. Every book seems to be a new place, new people, new adventures. But, it feels like Lindskold has no imagination for the places she has already explored and so is forced to make up more and more new lands to have her stories in.

And the fact that Firekeeper and the wolf are practically mated, without the mating, is just pushing the beastiality line and really isn’t appropriate.

Goodbye Jane, your first Wolf book was great, I shall remember you by that one, and not the rest.

Firekeeper and Derian are captured and taken South, to a land where people know about Royal Beasts and use them for future telling. Firekeeper learns about her origins and how she came to be with the wolves.

Lindskold takes this book down a path I was not very comfortable with. Firekeeper wants to be a wolf and be with Blindseer. Practically bestiality. I hope the rest of the books in the series turn from this path, or I’m done with them.

Melina Shield has married the Healed One of New Kelvin and is working on setting free an ancient dragon to consolidate her power. FireKeeper and Co must stop her. All the while, settlers are starting to move beyond the Iron Mountains, threatening the Royal Beasts. King Tedric proclaims them off limits, but it seems like war between humans and royal beasts is in the near future.

Lindskold uses the growth of humanity as a reason why humans are starting to push beyond the Iron Mountains, but with all the wars and the sub-standard standard of living among the majority of peoples, it doesn’t really seem reasonable that there are that many people yet.

Melina Shield maneuvers things so that the artifacts Vallora took are sent for study to New Kelvin, with Melina as the understudy. The group must stop her. Lots of politic’ing and kind of sad. Firekeeper finds out a bit of history from the Royals about Royal/Human interaction. 

In the end Firekeeper has to give up what she wants and tries to please both humans and Royals. She’s the one stuck in the middle.

A young girl, raised by Royal wolves [bigger and smarter] is taken back to medieval civilization as the possible heir of a kingdom. Turns out she isn’t, but she ends up saving the King and helping the kingdom.

The first in at least 6 Wolf novels. This was a very enjoyable read. There was NO angst, no bitter self-recriminations. The author kept the emotional tone of the book upbeat, forward moving and didn’t let you get mired in despair and the past.

Worth getting in hardback.
