Title: They Also Serve

Series: Jump Universe #3

Author: Mike Moscoe

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: SF

Pages: 357

Synopsis:

Trouble and Crew get their ship sabotaged and in jumping end up at a Lost colony from the first lost jump ship.

The world is being run, in the background, by an ancient supercomputer. Only problem is, it appears to have gone insane and is now splitting part into separate entries. So the crew must figure out a way home, solve the domestic squabbles their presence has created AND fight a super computer that wants to kill every human on the planet.

My Thoughts:

I think I’ve had enough of Mike Moscoe/Shepherd. There has never been 1 big thing that has annoyed me, but just a series of little pinpricks and this book pushed me over the edge.

False guilt, internal melodrama, people acting like idiots for no apparent reason, are among some of the reasons I won’t continuing with this author. Another big one is characters who deny they are good at something so that others are forced to say so. I HATE it when people fish for compliments or pretend to be modest.

Au revoir Mike. You always rubbed me the wrong way and now I don’t have to deal with it any more. Ahhh, it feels good.

Title: Furious

Series: Kris Longknife #10

Author: Mike Shepherd

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: SF

Pages: 368

Synopsis:

Being the galaxies Most Wanted Person isn’t all it cracked up to be. Kris is being kept on a backwater planet doing busy work and climbing back into the bottle while Jack is on a Super Secret Security Platform. In essence, they are both imprisoned.

Then Kris gets free, puts herself on trial on a world not associated with either the Longknifes OR the Grenfelds and begins the battle to prepare humanity for its worst nightmare.

While she succeeds in the trial, it doesn’t stop her from being wanted on other worlds. So she, Jack and the others setout to find the abominations and to scout and kill them if possible.

My Thoughts:

Once again, this felt like 2 separate stories in one book. You’d think I’d be expecting it or used to it after 10 books, but no, it gets me every time. Maybe Shepherd has ADHD?

Pretty much everything I’ve ever said about the previous books applies here. This is an open ended series with no real over-arching series plot without a conclusion for us to look forward to. If these books weren’t in the 300-500 page range, I’d be tempted to just call this a serial and let Shepherd rot. In some ways I think Shepherd would do better to let this series turn into something like the Rogue Angel series with nothing but action plots and ghost writers. At least that way I won’t be expecting more than I end up getting.

If you’ve stuck with the series this long, chances are you are going to stick with it for another 10 books unless they are horribly written and Shepherd is a good enough writer that I don’t foresee that happening for quite some time.

Title: The Price of Peace

Series: Jump Universe #2

Rating: 3.5 of 5 Stars

Genre: SF

Synopsis:

The group is hired by Westhaven [?] to hunt down some pirates and in the process come across a new group of corporate flunkies who are pushing a new drug to fund their rogue ways.

My Thoughts:

This was almost exactly like one of the Kris Longknife books where one of the little adventures is about rescuing some people from slave labor of drug harvesting.

This was the exact clone of that story [or to be correct, the KL book was a copy of this], and to be honest, I liked this one better.

Trouble, and us, are introduced to his wife-to-be, and that was cool. I really enjoyed following Trouble as he was kidnapped and then rescued.

Nothing stood out about this story at all, much like the previous book and all of the Kris Longknife books. A good solid SF Adventure story that while not blowing my socks off certainly didn’t let me down.

One thing I noted, some editions say “Society of Humanity” and others “A Jump Universe Novel”.  I hate it when things like a series name change happens for unfathomable reasons. It strikes me as messy and amateur’ish [not on Moscoe’s part, but by the publishers,  Ace/Penguin]

Title: Daring

Series: Kris Longknife

Author: Mike Shepherd

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: SFF

Synopsis:

Kris heads out into the vast reaches of space to investigate the area where Iteechee ships are disappearing. She wants a quick, small force that can get in, look and get out like hell was on their tails.

Due to politics however, she gets saddled with ships from all the main political groups [United Sentients, Peterwald Empire, etc, etc] and must forge them into one unit while keeping command herself.

And when the aliens are found, and found to be humanlike, but so hostile that they kill themselves, families and all, before there is even the chance of capture, Kris must decide how to play this. Does she start the next interstellar war, or does she toss in the chips and let the politicians at home make the decision.

My Thoughts:

This was a pretty good action/adventure story. However, the death of billions of the aliens by Kris’s hands was a hard pill to swallow. What kind of man is Shepherd that he thinks up a scenario where his character has to kill BILLIONS of people all at once to survive? The setup made it the correct and the ethical choice, but that scope? If this story was real life, Kris would soon go crazy from the guilt of her actions, no matter how right. That scope of death is not something that can be lightly shouldered.

The emergence of the romance between Kris and Jack is no surprise, to anyone. It really felt more like a plot device than anything else.

And the ending, where Kris is going to have face a court for her “crimes” against the aliens? It is a great setup for the next book but it really sucks as an ending for this one.

Synopsis:

A sequel series to Mike Shepherd’s [aka Mike Moscoe, or vice versa] Kris Longknife series. Takes place during her Grandpa Troubles time and before humanity encounters the aliens.

This is the battle between the inner planets and the diaspora.

My Thoughts:

This was pretty much like the Kris Longknife series, just without all the whining. However, the sexual side of things was a bit more blatant.

On the positive side, the action was a bit more, the self-indulgent rants didn’t exist and there were no references to non-existent boobs or hips. Lord, that last one alone made this one book better than the whole KL series.

Looking forward to the rest of the books in this trilogy.

ps,

Leafmarks didn’t have this book in their system, period. I tried title, author, isbn and asin. So I’m done with them for a couple of months or a year, if they survive that long.

Synopsis

Kris and Crew, in the process of hunting pirates and preparing to investigate the problem announced by the Iteechee, get involved in a Grenfeld problem.

One they can’t walk away from, as a certain 12 year old girl, namely Abby’s niece Cara, is right in the middle of it.

So Kris must help her longtime enemy, destroy a pirate nest, rescue a youngling and do it all without setting off a war with the unstable Grenfeld empire.

My Thoughts

This was fluff. The badguys aren’t even really “badguys”, just a bunch of wannabe warlords. Vicky Grenfeld gets all pally with Kris. Cara acts like a spoiled brat and is put in a VERY dangerous situation because of it.

Oh, and the author keeps Cara from really experiencing what would have happened to her if she HAD been kidnapped by pirates. I’m not a fan of violence against children, at all, but this was so blatant, so pathetic on the authors part that it completely turned me off.

Everything goes as Kris plans, she wins, they lose. Rah, rah, rah.  Yeah, not too excited or anything about this book. I hope the next book picks things up or it will turn into a snooze-fest.

Synopsis

Princess Kris Longknife meets up with an Itechee envoy who has been sent to warn humanity of a potential threat to both their species.

The second plot is a localized plot on a planet to try to split the United Sentients federation.

My Thoughts

I didn’t have the usual whiplash, “did I miss a book” feeling when I started this. Considering the problems between the U.S. and the Peterwalds and the internal problems of the U.S., I was kind of surprised that Shepherd decided to write about the Itechee, the big bad aliens who almost wiped out humanity 80’ish years ago.

And I was even more surprised that they were “friendly” and bringing warning of an even greater threat to us all. Ramped up the “Threat Matrix” and made sure that the series wasn’t going to end in 2 books. Boo to that! I am getting sick of the “never ending” series I’m coming across lately. A long series is fine, but one that has no over arching plot, no “big” storyline, that just plods on from one plot to the next, well, it reminds me of Alan Dean Foster’s Pip and Flinx series, that I gave up in disgust on.  I just hope this doesn’t become something like that.

The little on planet battle was a brief, easy lull in the tension. There was no chance of it working and we the reader could see that a mile away. So we got to see Space Marines kick local redneck butt. Good stuff.

All along I thought this was going to deserve a 4star. Then Shepherd has Longknife start wondering sexually about the Itechee ambassador, to the point of spying on him while swimming. 7 foot tall aliens with no penises, well, WHY would a female be interested in that? It grossed me out and smacked of filthy fan service.

Or maybe Shepherd is a sick perv and he can’t admit it so it is sublimated into his stories?

Really enjoyed the ground based battle that comprised the first 2/3rds of the book then the space based battle was “meh”.

I think I enjoyed this more because Kris wasn’t whining every 3 seconds about either her lack of boobs, her “hatred” of all things political or her lack of romance.

This was more action and less emotion. I liked it.

Kris is embassied to another planet, and ends up saving it from a Peterwald invasion.

I am a bit tired of Shepherd emphasizing how tall, slim hipped, flat butted and flat chested Kris is. It is just annoying to be honest.

Other than that, this was a good rousing, blood soaked tale of action and adventure.
