Title: The Covenant of Genesis

Series: Wilde and Chase

Author: Andy McDermott

Rating: 2 of 5 Stars

Genre: Action/Adventure

Pages: 594

Format: Kindle

Synopsis:

Nina is kicked out the UN agency at the instigation of the President of the US because of her actions retarding his progress in the previous book.

At the same time she uncovers ancient artifacts that could drastically change what people think about the beginning of humanity.

And she runs afoul of a Super Secret, Super Powerful, organization called the Covenant of Genesis.

Without backing, without funding, Nina and Eddie must save the Garden of Eden.

My Thoughts:

This book is where I part ways with McDermott.

He pretty much pummels monotheistic religions and then once they’re down, stomps on their hands and ribs. With a few kicks in the balls for good measure.  I get enough of that in real life without having it be part of my entertainment.

I must also mention the violence. I have a very high tolerance for violence in books. But this got the ultra-violence tag and really should have had an “ultra ultra ultra violence” tag. Pirates attack Nina and Eddie and it is brutal. Heads cut off, spearings, guts, etc, etc. Then Eddie hunts the pirates down and offs them all, once again graphically. I noticed this before the religious ball stomping began by the way.

Title: The Secret of Excalibur

Series: Wilde and Chase

Author: Andy McDermott

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: Action/Adventure

Pages: 530

Format: Kindle

Synopsis:

A man claiming to be a friend of Nina’s parents gives Nina some important info about the sword Excalibur and then, before he can actually explain anything, is promptly killed.

This sets Nina and Eddie onto the case and into yet another whirlwind adventure, this time trying to recover Excalibur, before a nefarious, blacker than black, Agency of the United States can use it to start World War III. And they have to deal with a Russian billionaire who wants it for himself.

And Nina meets Eddie’s family.

My Thoughts:

Except for one little bit, less than a page, I enjoyed this adventure the most, even while groaning.  Everything is just so neat and pat and the puzzles are revealed like nine pins and Nina knocks them down like a professional bowler and Eddie just handles everything physical beyond what even Batman could take. I need to turn off my brain so I don’t ask questions and I’d enjoy these better.

The main thing that bothered me was when Nina is getting some medal from the United States President, they have a back and forth about his supporters and  how a bunch of them are Creationists. In that conversation Nina is snide beyond belief and the President pretty much throws them under the bus. It just came out of left field, smacked me in the face and then was never part of the story again. And this type of thing hasn’t been in the previous 2 books, so it was weird to have it thrown in. Maybe McDermott had had a bad day or something?

Once again, the action was top notch. There was a car chase in England, somewhere, and Eddie and Nina are having a shootout with the Russians and Eddie’s grandmother is in the car with them. Eddie is a habitual swearer and it was very amusing to read about him trying to turn his streaks of swearing into something more presentable for his grandmother. It just made me grin.

Title: The Tomb of Hercules

Series: Wilde and Chase

Author: Andy Mcdermott

Rating: 3 of 5 Battle Axes

Genre: Action/Adventure

Pages: 541

Format: Kindle

Synopsis:

Nina Wilde, now in charge of a large U.N. based agency, is stuck behind a desk instead of doing actual archaeological work.

Eddie Chase, now Nina’s underling, is also stuck behind a desk. Not a good thing for anybody.

So when an old Ex calls, Eddie goes running. And Nina must chase him down or lose him. So begins a globetrotting adventure to find the Tomb of Hercules, a tomb legendary for its vast treasure trove.

My Thoughts:

After the rather over the top, lets kill 75% of the world kind of plot from the previous book, this simple smash, shoot and grab adventure was nice.

Let’s see. Wilde and Chase drive a monster dumptruck from a diamond mine and take out some tanks and stuff. They go zipping down some rivers in one of those everglade airfan boats and have battles with some speedboats. They get captured by 2 different billionaires. Eddie’s Ex is a bitch. They invade an underwater living area and Nina ends up chasing after Eddie in an experimental submarine that could blow up for no reason whatsoever. They find the tomb and watch as man after man fall prey to to the booby traps. And when you thought it was all over…they have to stop a nuclear bomb from going off in Manhattan while chained to a big boat.

Unrelenting action from beginning to end.

Title: The Hunt for Atlantis

Series: Wilde & Chase

Author: Andy McDermott

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Genre: Action/Adventure

Pages: 546

Synopsis:

Nina Wilde, orphaned child of Atlantis hunters, continues in her parents footsteps. With help from the Philanthropist Kristian Frost, Nina has a shot at actually finding Atlantis.

But opposing her is Qobras and his Brotherhood.

Being protected by Eddy Chase, Nina globetrots, tracking down one clue after another.

My Thoughts:

As much as I complain about some of the action/adventure books I read being too short, this was too long.

It was fun, mediocre and pretty on par for how this month has gone. See how long this series lasts.
